What's SimpleDiagrams good for anyway?

Making diagrams. Simple ones. Getting an idea out of your head quickly and into some kind of form you can either save for later or share with others. There are a few nice features, but not so many that the tool is hard to use. Lots of shapes...and more coming.

I want to buy a license. How does that work?

First, you go to the "Buy" page and click the "Buy Now" button on the right side of the page. This will take you to FastSpring, where you'll complete the transaction securely.

After you finish the FastSpring process, you'll be brought back to the SimpleDiagrams "purchase complete" page to let you know the purchase went through.

Then, check your email in ten minutes or so (the same email you have registered with FastSpring) for a confirmation email from us with your registration key and some installation instructions.

I got my confirmation email...now what do I do?

If you have the trial version of SimpleDiagrams already installed, you just need to fire it up, click the "Upgrade Now" button on the welcome screen, and enter your email and license key.

If you haven't installed SimpleDiagrams at all...

  1. Before you start, you need to have Adobe AIR installed. If you don't you can get the AIR installer here: http://get.adobe.com/air/
  2. Now install SimpleDiagrams. You can either use the installer on the "Home" page or download the SimpleDiagrams.air file manually http://www.simplediagrams.com/download
  3. Once your installation is complete, start SimpleDiagrams.
  4. When you start the program, it will ask you to accept the End User License Agreement.
  5. Then on the next screen, click on the "Register Now" link at the bottom of the screen
  6. Enter your email and the registration key listed above and click the "Register" button
  7. Done. Your SimpleDiagrams application is now running in Licensed mode! Start explaining stuff to your friends with simple diagrams...

I want more libraries of symbols. Gimme.

Yes. Libraries have been long neglected. Your wait for new and interesting libraries will soon come to an end.

How do I set up Basecamp for use with SimpleDiagrams?

If you haven't already, you'll need to make a small change on your Basecamp account so that SimpleDiagrams can upload your snazzy diagrams.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Login to your Basecamp account with your browser.
  • go to your Dashboard, then click on the "Account" tab
  • On the first screen (the "Payment/Plans" tab), you'll see a section called "Basecamp API." This is where you say it's OK for third party programs like your SimpleDiagrams client to access your Basecamp account.
  • If you agree to the terms of service, check the box and then click the submit button

Also -- this is important -- you need to create at least one project in your Basecamp account so that SimpleDiagrams has something to export to.

OK. Now back to your SimpleDiagrams program. You need to make sure that you have the correct URL in the "Account URL" field in SimpleDiagrams when you configure your login.

If you've set your Basecamp account to use encryption, make sure the url you enter has https:// in front of it. If you're not using encryption with your Basecamp account, your URL will only need http://

For example, if you have an account called "myaccount" and it has encryption enabled, your login screen should look like this...

I purchased a site license. Can each user install on multiple machines?

Yes. Each user can install SimpleDiagrams on three of their own machines. If a user has more than three machines, contact me. We should talk about machine reduction and the value of nature walks.

I purchased a site license for a number of seats. I don't really have specific users.

Ok, in that case, each license can be installed on one machine, for anybody to use on that machine.

Why did SimpleDiagrams change from a free/full version model to a 7-day trial model?

Man, I really struggled with this one. I was having trouble supporting the free/full version model...a lot of people are using the free version, but not enough are moving to a paid license. To continue improving SimpleDiagrams, I needed to dedicate more time to it. To dedicate more time, I need to sell more licenses.

So I changed up the offering to a 7-day trial with all features immediately available for you to use. These seven days should give you a good bit of time to decide if SimpleDiagrams is right for you. I hope you find it so helpful you don't mind the small fee, which allows me to continue making SimpleDiagrams even better!

If you really, really want to keep using the free version, you can always just download the last version I published as a "Free" vs. "Full" version, version 1.3.5. I'm leaving the 1.3.5 SimpleDiagrams installer available here. You won't get the latest cool updates and new features, but you'll still have your free simple diagrams. (Just don't update when the app lets you know there's a new version. And don't check the website...the new features coming up will be too tempting.)
